How wood weathers

All exterior wood changes over time. Here is what happens, what affects it, and how to keep Crisp cladding looking its best.

What weathering is

Sunlight, rain and changing humidity act on the surface of exterior wood. Ultraviolet light breaks down the outer fibres, and left uncoated, most wood turns silver-grey. Moisture cycles add surface checking and raised grain over time.

Lunawood, for example, states that its uncoated boards grey visibly within three to six months.

How Crisp slows it down

Every Crisp board is sealed on all six faces with a premium waterborne multi-coat system that protects the wood and holds the colour. Colour still changes gradually, but the coating keeps the change slow and even, and regular care keeps it that way.

What affects the rate

  • Exposure. Walls with more sun and weather change faster than shaded or covered areas, so weathering can differ across one building.
  • Colour. Lighter colours may need re-sealing sooner.
  • Application. Soffits and covered areas are protected from direct weather and change more slowly than open walls.

Keeping the colour

  • Wash the cladding every year to remove dirt, pollen and mould.
  • Re-seal siding, soffits, fascia and trim every five years, and decking every one to three years, with a Crisp-approved sealer, available from Crisp.
  • Touch up scratches or damage with the touch-up supplied with your order.
  • Lunawood advises against linseed oil on its products, as it can promote fungal growth.

Following the Crisp maintenance program keeps your 15-year limited warranty in effect.
