Material expectations

Wood is a natural material. This guide explains what to expect from Crisp boards on delivery and over time, so everyone on the project, from architect and designer to installer and owner, starts with the same understanding.

Natural variation

  • Colour and grain vary from board to board. Samples show the general look, not an exact match.
  • Dimensions. Boards are milled to close tolerances, but small differences in thickness and width between boards are normal.
  • Order extra. Allow 15% for waste, so boards can be selected on site and variation accommodated.

Movement

Wood absorbs and releases moisture, so it expands and contracts with changes in humidity and temperature. Some cupping, bowing, twisting and checking can occur. Proper acclimation, spacing and a ventilated rainscreen reduce movement; the installation guide sets out how.

By species

  • Western Red Cedar. Select tight knot (STK) grade shows small, tight knots as part of its character; clear grades show few or none. Natural extractives in the heartwood help it resist decay and insects.
  • Western Hemlock. Pale, consistent colour and a clear vertical grain. Made for soffits, ceilings and interior walls, not exterior cladding.
  • Lunawood. Thermally modified Nordic spruce, STK grade. The heat treatment improves dimensional stability and durability through the whole board.

Colour over time

Every board is sealed on all six faces, which protects the wood and holds the colour. Exterior colour still changes gradually with sun and weather. Lighter colours, and walls with more sun and weather exposure, may need re-sealing sooner. See how wood weathers and care and maintenance.

What is normal

These are natural characteristics of wood, not defects:

  • Weathering, colour change and fading over time
  • Variation in wood grain, texture and tone
  • Expansion, contraction, shrinking and swelling
  • Checking, splitting and cracking
  • Cupping, twisting and warping
  • Pitch or sap bleeding

The full terms are in the limited warranty.

Before you install

  • Inspect the material on arrival and report any concerns within 10 days of delivery.
  • Installation is considered final acceptance of the colour and quality.
  • A mock-up (test) area on site is highly recommended if there are any questions about appearance or installation.
