Installation guide
The essentials for handling and installing Crisp material. Everyone on the project should read the full installation manual before starting.
Before you order
Wood is a natural material. Small differences in size, colour and grain between boards are normal, and wood moves with humidity and temperature. Allow 15% extra for waste and board selection.
The essentials
- Inspect on arrival. Report freight damage at delivery, and any other shortages or concerns within 10 days. Installation is final acceptance of colour and quality.
- Store dry and ventilated. Keep bundles covered, at least 6 in off the ground, with the wrap loosened for airflow.
- Acclimate. Let the wood reach a stable moisture content before installing, and check it with a moisture meter. Western Red Cedar and Western Hemlock may need up to 2 weeks.
- Seal every field cut before installation.
- Fasten with stainless steel. Nails must go at least 1.25 in into solid wood. No staples, T-nails or interior finish nails.
- Install on a rainscreen. Use furring strips over a weather barrier, never directly on sheathing or house wrap.
- Keep clearances and gaps. 8 to 12 in from the ground, 2 in from the roof, 1 in from decks. Leave 1/8 in at trim and corners, 1/4 in at metal, and 1/16 in at butt joints.
All construction is subject to local building codes. Mock-ups and installers experienced with coated architectural wood are strongly recommended.
Touch-up instructions
Every order ships with a gallon of touch-up stain matched to your colour.
- Surface clean, dry and dust-free. Stir the stain well before and during use.
- Apply between 5 °C and 25 °C (41 °F and 77 °F), ideally 21 °C (70 °F). Not in rain, frost, direct sun or on warm wood, and keep above 1 °C (34 °F) for 48 hours after.
- Brush on with a natural bristle brush, working the stain in to blend with the surrounding surface.
- Touch dry in 2 to 8 hours and recoat after 12 to 48 hours, depending on temperature.
- Clean brushes with warm soapy water. Store the can between 10 °C and 30 °C, sealed and protected from freezing.
Lunawood installation
Lunawood publishes its own installation guides. Where they are stricter than the guidance above, follow Lunawood. Key points from the Lunawood facade guide:
- Screws of at least A2 (AISI 304) stainless steel, at least twice the cladding thickness, heads flush.
- Pre-drill at 0.5 to 0.8 times the screw diameter, and always within 50 mm (2 in) of a board end.
- A ventilated cavity of at least 25 mm (1 in) behind the cladding.
- At least 300 mm (about 12 in) between the bottom of the cladding and the ground.
